Dear Reader,
In full disclosure, Iâve been documenting this story as it happens or as itâs been recounted to me. But this is the point where Penelopeâs story ends. Iâve decided to set aside my typewriter and move my family to a safer location for the time being. The chapters following this are pure speculation. Until Penelope finds me again, I canât guarantee the truth in what comes next.
By the time I left Penelope back in Morningwood, something had begun to transform inside her and was slowly working its way out. Not long ago, the princess Iâd picked up from jail was frightened, skittish, and most of all, lost. But the woman I dropped off today was anything but confused. Penelope kept her chin up and didnât even shed a tearful good-bye. Her distracted mind was noticeably elsewhere. Her entire persona had changed, and oddly enough, even her hair had grown with streaks of an almost-purplish, inky-black hue.
She waved me good-bye with an air of confidence. Whatever my friend had set out to accomplish, I had no doubts sheâd get there. The spark in her eye reminded me of my husbandâs from long ago when heâd lived as a genie with a purpose. She might no longer be a princess, but she no longer needed to be one. Her transformation during the short trip back to her home was incredible, and I knew Gertie would have been proud of her goddaughterâs newfound independence.
As per the princessâs request, Iâd left a note at my door, directing Vail to the location sheâd told me about earlierâOne, two, three. One, two, three, three. But I worried my friendâs bravery was also borderline stupidity. She wasnât thinking clearly, and I couldnât blame her grieving mind. So, before weâd left, Iâd attached the article about Penelopeâs godmother and Priscilla with my letter to Vail in hopes that they would reunite, and if she caught herself in a bind, he would know to look to Priscilla for answers.
As for my family and me, we are hunkered down and safely hiding with friends with no plans of returning to our home until our courageous heroine finds us again or sends word that itâs safe. But rest assured, as a dutiful reporter, I will keep you up-to-date with the latest and continue my research for truth and transparency.
